History

Jhang city is situated on the left bank of the river Chenab at a distance of about 11 Kilometres from its bed. It lies between north latitude 31o -15‟ and 31o 17‟ and east longitude 72o 18‟ and 72 -22’ Railway line connecting ShorKot Cantt. Jhang City is situated about 40km from Gojra and Toba Tek Singh cities, Faisalabad city is about 76 km and Chiniot is about 86km from Jhang. Jhang city is the headquarter of Jhang District, and is located in the central portion of the Punjab province. It is very old district and had Chiniote Tehsil as part of this district.  In the year 2009 the tehsil of Chiniot was transformed into a separate district.  It is known for the shrine of Sultan Bahoo and Heer and Ranjha's Tombs.

 

The climate of the district is hot and dry during summer and cold and dry during winter. The surface of the district presents three distinct levels i.e. Sand Dunes of Thal on the extreme West, low lying river valley in the centre and old Sandal Bar on the extreme East. The rivers of Jhelum and Chenab make their way through the district and Trimmu Head-works is the pint of their confluence. 

The population census report of year 2017 has not been published by Government of Pakistan however the provisional data released by the relevant department shows a population of 414,131 persons within municipal limits. As per land scan process to estimate the population in close approximation, the entire inhabited areas of Jhang city had population of 464,149 persons in the year 2017 with an annual growth rate of 1.31 % and it is expected to rise to 528,665 persons in the year 2027.
